Genesis 11:3

They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.

The motivation for building “a city” with its “tower” was to make the builders “a name. Later God would “make a name” for Abram. The object of this endeavor was evidently to establish a center by which they might maintain their unity, achieve God-like authority, and gain world domination, with a one-world government.

A defensive wall is the hallmark of a city. Cities in the ancient Near East were not designed to be lived in but were intended for religious and public purposes. God desired unity for humankind, but one that He created, not one founded on a social state. They wanted to “empower” themselves. Both motive and object were ungodly.

Pride will result in the very thing that we want to avoid. A man’s pride shall bring him low, but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and he shall lift you up.

Memory verse: 1 Kings 6:9

You will never reach your destination if you mind those that are always against you
