LEISURE and PASTIMES

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, To retire late, To eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.

LESSON

It is foolish, frustrating, and futile to attempt projects without seeking God’s blessing. This applies to building a house and building a household. This also applies to the much larger task of defending a city. Putting in long hours of hard work will only lead to weariness. Conversely, those who trust in the Lord, His beloved, experience rest. Solomon was not denigrating hard work but was advocating dependence on the Lord as one works.

Whatever our endeavor (labor), it will fail unless God is involved. Will we look to God to build our families, deliver us from evil, to bless our work, as our shield and protector, we look to God to guide our worship of Him or to give us the increase in His Vineyard, the church. Remember the words of Solomon, Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build It.” “Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.” “It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the  bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep.”

Memory Verse: 1 Peter 4:9

A life of leisure and a life of laziness are two things. There will be sleeping enough in the grave.
