Psalm 82:3

Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.

Israel’s judges were perverting justice. God called them to practice righteous justice. The essence of proper judging was making sure that the defenseless got justice. Israel’s judges, who should have been the wisest of the people, were ignorant of the importance of fair judgment and he consequences of unfair judging. Consequently law and order, the foundations of life on earth, were unstable.

Do justice to the afflicted and needy – See that justice is done them; that they are not wronged by persons of wealth, of power, and of rank. Such care does religion take of those who have no natural guardians. The poor and the needy – the widow and the fatherless – owe to the religion of the Bible a debt which no language can express.
