Power to Overcome

Luke 10:19

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

The power that Jesus had given the Seventy, to escape injury physically, paralleled their ability to overcome Satan and his demons spiritually. Thus the connection with the previous verse is clear.  In other words, today we should probably take His words figuratively, rather than literally. This was evidently a special protection that Jesus gave His disciples during this mission. However, that protection apparently lasted only a short time. Jesus’ disciples since then have experienced injury, so it was evidently a limited provision in view of the unique ministry of Jesus’ original disciples and apostles. Even during the apostolic age, many disciples did not escape injury or death.

We may think our enemy is flesh and blood. But the true enemy is not the government or the Republicans or Democrats, your wife or your wife’s family, or your boss. Your enemy is not the pornographer, the liquor baron, or the drug pusher. They are only victims of our common enemy. The reason that so many times we don’t win the battle is that we never show up for war! We are not wrestling against flesh and blood! The enemy is a spiritual foe, and the battle is a spiritual battle.

Memory Verse: 2 Corinthians 2:9
