Matthew 12:36

“But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.

Jesus did not want His critics to gain any satisfaction from what He had just said. Their externally righteous appearance did not excuse them from speaking as they did. Rather, people’s “words” are what God will use to judge them eventually. The “careless” word is the word spoken without deliberation. One might think it insignificant, except that it reveals character. “Every word” spoken reflects the heart’s overflow, and God knows about it. Therefore words are very important.

It has been my purpose to remind us of Jesus’ words in Matthew 12:36.To raise your awareness of how easy it is to sin in our speech. And to remind us of the graceful speech that should proceed from our mouths.

I hope that I have stimulated your thinking to give careful consideration to God’s standard. May each of you possess the same desire as that expressed in the prayer of the Psalmist:

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”
