Sacrifice doesn’t replace obedience

1 Samuel 15:22

“But Samuel replied: ‘Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams”

Rather than confessing his sin, Saul sought to justify his disobedience . He believed it was for a worthy purpose, and he failed to take responsibility for his actions and blamed the people instead. Samuel now realized that Saul was not a leader, but the tool and slave of the people.

Samuel had earlier delivered a message of doom to Eli in the morning. Now he delivered one to Saul on another morning. There is in all of us an inclination to resent being told what to do; but those in positions of authority and power are all the more reluctant to acknowledge anyone else’s superior authority.
The fact we want to emphasize is the supremacy of obedience. There is nothing said wrong with sacrifice for it is a service of Divine ordination. They are the expressions of the highest conditions of being. Good men live to sacrifice, and what is more they live by sacrifice. Sacrifices were designed to subordinate the material to the moral and to show that the gold and silver and the cattle upon a thousand hills are God’s. Obedience is due to God from all His intelligent creatures, I suppose none will deny. It is the original unchangeable law of creation, which everyone after discovering it choose not to undermine, but to support and confirm. It was the religion of man in the primitive state of innocence; and it shall be the religion of heaven, when we shall see our Maker.

Memory Verse: Romans 3:25   (Sacrifice ultimately was paid through Jesus Christ)
