Matthew 24:42

Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Jesus’ disciples need to remain watchful because the exact time of the King’s return is unknown, even though signs of His coming will indicate His approach.

What you are watching for is a party. Yes, what you are watching for is a party. And that party is not just down the street making up its mind when to come to you. It’s already hiding in the front, banging on the pulpit, and laughing its way up to the communion rail. The unknown day and hour of it finally bursting into the world, pushing its way up to the front of church isn’t something to be afraid of. It’s all part of God’s faithfulness. God’s not our mother-in-law, who comes to see whether her wedding present china has been chipped. He’s a child like father, who is always up to some kind of mischief, who bursts through the door with a loaf of bread under one arm and a bottle of wine under the other. You do need to watch for this coming, but only because it would be such a pity to miss all the fun.
