1 Samuel 16:17

And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

When God’s Spirit came upon David his anointer “Samuel” left, leaving him in good hands. When God’s Spirit left Saul an evil spirit came upon him, leaving him in dire straits. Saul’s evil bent was by the permission and plan of God. We must realize that in the last analysis all penal consequences come from God, as the Author of the moral law and the one who always does what is right.

King Saul was a manic depressant. He asked his men to find him someone who could play music, so as to comfort him. One of his servants had heard David play, so Saul sent word to Jesse to send his son David to him. David, who had been anointed as the next king was still watching the sheep! What purpose could God possibly have for leaving a man as important as David, guarding a bunch of nasty old sheep? The answer is to prepare him for a greater purpose by building his character where he was. And He can and will do the same for you if you would let him.
