1 John 4:1

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

John wrote, “Stop believing.” Evidently some of his first readers were believing false teaching. It is necessary to distinguish the “Spirit of God” from false “spirits”, “because many false prophets have gone out into the world”. False spirits produce false teaching. John was speaking here of the “false prophets” as the mouthpieces of the spirit that inspired them, not as the foretellers of future things.

Don’t believe everything you hear, or everyone who claims to be from God. How foolish it would be to do so should be obvious. We would be in a constant state of confusion (believing one thing one moment, and another thing the next). We would be easily misled by those teaching error.

Memory Verse: Ephesians 5:6
