The Message of the Seers – Micah 5:1-4

1 Now shalt thou gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us; they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.

2  But thou, Beth-lehem Ephrathah, which art little to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall one come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.

3 Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she who travaileth hath brought forth: then the residue of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.

4 And he shall stand, and shall feed his flock in the strength of Jehovah, in the majesty of the name of Jehovah his God: and they shall abide; for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.

Dr. George Sweeting once estimated that “more than a fourth of the Bible is predictive prophecy…Both the Old and New Testaments are full of promises about the return of Jesus Christ. Over 1800 references appear in the O.T., and seventeen O.T. books give prominence to this theme. Of the 260 chapters in the N.T., there are more than 300 references to the Lord’s return–one out of every 30 verses. Twenty-three of the 27 N.T. books refer to this great event…For every prophecy on the first coming of Christ, there are 8 on Christ’s second coming.”

– Today in the Word

Ezekiel 33:33 says “And when this cometh to pass, then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.” Consider these incredible words, “lo, it will come.” These words emphasize the reality of the prophecies of the Bible. Have you considered the realities of the prophecies concerning the birth and life of Christ?

The seers in the Old Testament made some incredible predictions about the coming Messiah. Micah prophesied the place of His birth. Isaiah spoke of the manner of His birth. Daniel forecast the time! In fact more than 300 prophecies concerning Christ’s first coming were fulfilled! What tremendous lessons we can learn from the message of the seers!

First of all, we learn the tremendous accuracy of the Bible and the certainty of God’s Word. If God said it, it will come to pass! Another conclusion we can draw is that, if the prophecies of His first coming were literally fulfilled, then so must the prophecies of his second coming be literally fulfilled. This means that Jesus is coming again. What a glorious thought to think about this Christmas season!
