HINDRANCES TO PRAYER

Lack of Transparency (with God and others)

James 5:16

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

LESSON

In view of the possibility of spiritual and physical sickness following sin, believers should confess their sins (against one another) to one another” (normally privately). Furthermore they should “pray for one another” so God may heal them (both spiritually and physically). In the ancient mind sin and sickness went together, and so confession of sin was necessary if prayer for the sick was to be effective. The confession is to be not only to the elders (or other ministers) but to one another.

James gives us the solution to trouble and several other things that we encounter in life. The world that we live in desperately needs God’s intervention, and so we need the kind of prayer that changes things. Prayer is such a vital part of the Christian life that we need to be mindful of things that are hindrances in our prayer life.
