2 Corinthians 13:5

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

In anticipation of Paul’s judgment, he called on his Christian readers to “examine” themselves, to make sure every one of them was walking “in the faith.” Testing themselves would preclude his having to discipline them. Paul believed that “Jesus Christ” was working in each one of them “unless” they failed this “test.” In that case, there was some doubt whether they were walking in the faith.” Paul himself claimed to be walking in the faith (“we ourselves do not fail the test”).
It’s easy to say that we love God, as long as we don’t probe any deeper than that. But the Bible does probe deeper than that, and it asks more questions than just that one. It causes us to take a spiritual inventory of our lives.
