Mark 10:13-14

Acceptance, Of One Another

And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

The simple trust in Jesus, that the children demonstrated, contrasts with the hostility of the Pharisees in the previous paragraph. Another thought connection is the progression from discussing marriage to discussing children. Jesus became “indignant” when He learned that “the disciples” were discouraging those who “were bringing” the “children to Him. The disciples were abusing their authority by excluding some people from coming to Jesus: those outside their circle, and those regarded generally as unimportant.

Have we taken to heart the lessons Jesus intended for His disciples We must receive the kingdom of God with a childlike trust and humility? We must show an appreciation and love for little children? And pray for them and their parents? May we as disciples of Christ never be too busy to take time for the littlest of children, to learn from them as to how we should be in the kingdom of God and to pray for them, to encourage them in both word and deed.
