Hebrews 12:1-2

WHEREFORE seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The “cloud of witnesses” refers to the Old Covenant saints. They are “witnesses” not because they presently witness our actions, but because by their lives they bore witness to their faith in God.

In view of this encouragement we should lay aside everything that impedes our running the Christian race successfully. The reason for this self-discipline is so we can keep on running the Christian race effectively. You have need of endurance. The Christian life like an endurance race, a marathon, not a 50-yard dash. The real test of life is the steady, normal progress of the soul—’not paroxysms of effort but steady endurance.
