Proverbs 19:20-21

Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

Not only do fathers need to discipline their sons, but sons need to “accept” the “counsel” and “discipline” of their fathers. A humble, teachable spirit, especially in one’s youth, leads on to a life of wisdom. Moses gave Joshua good advice, which Joshua heeded, and he acted wisely as a result.

People plan all kinds of things, but only what God approves comes to pass. He is sovereign and determines outcomes. Paul planned to go into Asia and Bithynia, but the Lord closed those doors and led him instead into Macedonia. The answers to the riddles and problems of life lies with God. Wise counselors know the God of the Bible and know the Bible of God. The Bible’s profound insights should cause us to face and solve problems in the wisest way.
