Mark 9:43

And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

We tend to treat our sin lightly calling it shortcomings, errs, mistakes. In Mark 9, Jesus gives a series of warnings to His disciples. He warns of the seriousness of sin and its dire consequences. God does not warn us about hell to scare us into a relationship with God, but God does tell us the natural consequence of separation from our Creator.

Does Jesus really want us to cut off our hands, and feet, and gouge out our eyes, and if we did, would that prevent us from sinning? No, what we need is a heart transplant, that only the Holy Spirit can perform. Instead of making physical cuts to physical parts of our bodies, what we have to do to avoid falling into sin is ask God to give us heart transplants, taking away our hearts of stone and giving us hearts of flesh.
