The Message of the Savior – Matthew 1:18-25

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.

19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

20 But when he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

21 And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name JESUS; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins.

22 Now all this is come to pass that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,

23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Immanuel; which is, being interpreted, God with us.

24 And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took unto him his wife;

25 and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name JESUS.

EXAMPLE

During the Spanish-American War, Clara Barton was overseeing the work of the Red Cross in Cuba. One day Colonel Theodore Roosevelt came to her, wanted to buy food for his sick and wounded Rough Riders. But she refused to sell him any. Roosevelt was perplexed. His men needed the help and he was prepared to pay out of his own funds. When he asked someone why he could not buy the supplies, he was told, “Colonel, just ask for it!” A smile broke over Roosevelt’s face. Now he understood–the provisions were not for sale. All he had to do was simply ask and they would be given freely.

LESSON

When Jesus came into this world, a really incredible event took place. God became a human being. God the Father sent God the Son to take upon Himself human flesh that man might have eternal life. Have you ever considered the awesomeness of this event? Contemplate the following observations for a moment.

Christ’s coming into the world demonstrates to all mankind that we have a God who loves us. He is not far removed from His creation, as some have suggested. He actually became one of us.

Christ also displayed for us the perfect life. We not only have the principles of the Bible to follow, but we also have His perfect example. What kind of character should believers have? They should have the character of Jesus Christ.

Finally, the message of Christ is the message of salvation for a lost race. He was born to die on the cross of Calvary so that sinners might trust Him and receive the gift of eternal life. This Christmas, take some time to mediate on what Christ means to you.

  1. Read Luke 1:38. What was Mary’s attitude in carrying the Christ child?
  2. Read Matthew 1:19-20, 24. What was Joseph’s initial thought concerning Mary and her situation?
  3. Who helped to change his mind?
  4. Read Matthew 1:21. What does it tell us about Jesus?
